The main use of peptones and protein hydrolysates is in the production of culture media; these are dehydrated, liquid and solid media for the growth and identification of microorganisms.


There are hundreds of different media formulations, and each may contain from one to four different peptones. Every culture media company has developed its own formulations to optimize the growth of a particular organism or group of organisms.


Significant volumes of peptones are also used in fermentation media which are used to produce larger volumes of microorganism biomass. In addition, many biotechnology and recombinant DNA procedures also require these media, and the volume is growing significantly. All these fermentation processes require peptones to provide the culture organisms with essential nutrients. Biotecnica offers cost-effective products for all applications, and some specialty products for those fermentations which produce high-value end products such as interferons, insulin and growth hormones.


The low endotoxin peptones main use is in the production of vaccines, antibodies, and a wide range of proteins in Biopharma industry.




Peptones are also used for some tissue culture media and vaccine stabilizers, especially lactalbumin hydrolysates. Other non-media applications have been in the area of cosmetics (where acid digests of casein are used in hair shampoo and conditioner formulations), in the area of electroplating (where hydrolyzed proteins are used to aid in the electroplating process), and in the area of special dietary products (where the hydrolysates are used as a source of amino acids).
